Understanding how to be Dementia Friendly

BRBN Dementia (8)

Is your business Dementia Friendly?

This Wednesday morning bright and early, the BRBN group were online and networking. The buzz word for the week was perseverance, a key trait to have if you want to ensure your clients do not forget you or your business. If you provide a service that your prospect will want at some point in the future, don’t despair if they don’t want to engage with you now. Bide your time, and wait until they do.

This week’s meeting was slightly different to the usual schedule. As a community-minded business network, BRBN does what it can for Beverley and the surrounding area. Today’s meeting brought that to bear. Instead of the usual 10 minute presentation given by a group member about their own business, this Wednesday saw Mandy Aitken give a 30 minute presentation about Dementia and ‘Dementia Friends’. Mandy owns the local franchise of Home Instead, a care provider that supports the elderly to lead independent lives in their own homes.

During the talk, Mandy gave the group a new way to think about Dementia and how it works using bookcases as an analogy. The group were also given the opportunity to look at ways in which they themselves could support people in the community who live with Dementia. Examples include fundraising, volunteering or just keeping in touch with someone they know with Dementia.

Dementia is a cruel disease, but it is possible to live well with it. If we all try to understand what it’s like living with Dementia, life could be better still.
