The importance of mindful speech

Many of our members are self employed, own a small business or are a ‘one man band’ so to speak. Being in this position has its challenges, but one major advantage to being a small or micro business is the unique opportunity it presents to provide clients with the best service possible. This was a prevalent theme in today’s informative and animated meeting.

By being independent and flexible, and by putting the clients’ needs first, businesses owners can ensure they do their best to meet those needs. Services can be tailor-made and as one member pointed out, business owners can guarantee the image of their business is the reality of what’s delivered.

The ‘education slot’ this week was based on an old saying that goes something like this: “It may take 20 years to build a reputation in business, but it only takes two minutes to destroy it”. However old this statement is, it’s still true, and perhaps now more than ever.

The sheer number of outlets we all have access to (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram…), and the speed at which content is published means it is even easier to jeopardise any reputation painstakingly built up.

The moral is to be mindful of what we say and how we say it, but also of how we react to situations whether they’re stressful or otherwise. The choice is ours of course and if done right we’ll reap the rewards.
